Agile Organisational Design

Rethinking structures. Scaling agility.

Communication is the driving force of today's companies. In order to create innovative products and services from information and knowledge, you need structures that enable and support team networking. Structures that streamline communication and effective collaboration along value streams - while creating maximum benefit for the customer. And that establishes company-wide learning. We call it Agile Organisational Design. This raises agility to a new level.

What does scaling agility and agile organisational design mean?

In our opinion, two aspects are particularly important for scaling agility: on the one hand, an organisation that is built along value streams with a customer focus. And on the other hand, a network in which employees can learn from each other and innovation can emerge.

We have different approaches to design the structures of a future process organisation with a focus on maximum value creation and efficiency for your customers.

Using SAFe for Business Agility

SAFe is the most widely used and successful framework for agility on a large scale. It offers certified training, coachings, proven concepts and assessments to help your company meet Lean Enterprise and Business Agility precepts.

New processes, structures and agile collaboration arise when you empower your employees: with the help of our certification training, we clarify the goals of your new organisational structure, individual roles and tasks, interactions and, above all, the values and principles behind them.

The introduction of SAFe is a transformation. That is why we recommend a pragmatic approach adapted to your specific situation. Together we explore your capabilites - because no two companies are the same and templates don't work well. We see SAFe as a means to achieve your strategic goals faster and more sustainably. Together, we focus on creating value for your customers. And get your employees on board.

“Business agility is not a teams sport – it is a corporate sport!” (Klaus Leopold)

Having many agile teams often does not mean that a company can react quickly in the market. It just means that the teams act faster. Flight Levels is a thought model of how we look at the whole organization.

To make your entire company faster, we visualize value generation as a whole, from vision to strategy to execution. We introduce improvements where they are most effective. Flight levels link different flight levels (strategy – end-to-end coordination – operations). This allows and generates business agility. The new transparency visualizes your work specifically at the respective flight level with the relevant information. Three flight levels bring the right people together, build communication channels and agile interactions between the levels and allow you to act faster and more focused.

In addition, the model supports you in developing towards a learning organization and thus achieving true business agility.

Pragmatic Scaling

You already have a few teams working agile and are wondering how you can now focus on the big picture again? Are you wondering how and whether scaling agile makes sense in your organisation?

We have developed our ‘Pragmatic Scaling’ approach to find the right answer for you together.

A fundamental principle of all scaling approaches is systemic and agile thinking and acting across team and department boundaries. Structurally, this understanding leads to an organisational structure along value streams – one of the most important parameters for business agility (source: Business Agililty Report 2019).

A value stream is built internally with flexible structures that both connect your teams and generate maximum value for your customers.

We highlight the different methods and approaches for agility at large, such as SAFe, LeSS and Flight Levels, and select the ones that suit you – pragmatically, situationally and purposefully.

Numerous companies have already found success in implementing agile methodologies to tackle the complexities and rapid changes of today’s business landscape. Within this context, transparency, collaboration, and continuous learning have emerged as pivotal drivers for fostering an agile corporate culture.

One modern approach to goal-setting that establishes a clear link between corporate strategy and execution is the utilization of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). By making the strategy transparent, measurable, and verifiable, OKRs facilitate enhanced focus and alignment across all levels of the organization.

When employed effectively, OKRs have the power to cultivate a culture of open dialogue, feedback, and recognition, serving as an indispensable leadership tool within agile organizations. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Agility fosters a mindset of collaborative engagement, and OKRs provide actionable steps to embody this mindset.
  • Combining crucial attributes such as focus, alignment, transparency, collaboration, self-organization, and short feedback cycles, OKRs and agility work hand in hand.
  • Transparency is a fundamental requirement for agility. OKRs enhance transparency, serving as a vital catalyst for cultural transformation. Just as agility is manifested through Kanban or Scrum boards, OKRs are made public to all members of the organization, promoting maximum transparency.
  • Instead of traditional top-down cascading approaches, negotiation, alignment, autonomy, and responsibility play pivotal roles in agile environments. OKRs enable the translation of these principles into tangible activities.

Objectives and Key Results naturally align with the principles of agile organizational development. In our view, OKRs are an integral part of an agile organization, irrespective of the specific framework utilized.
